Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has claimed that Bangladesh is moving toward a dangerous period of instability and warned that the country risks becoming “another Pakistan” if the current situation continues. He said such a development should be a serious concern for India’s national security and the wider South Asian region.

Speaking during a media interaction in New Delhi, Joy alleged that extremist elements and foreign intelligence agencies—particularly Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)—are expanding their influence in Bangladesh. According to him, this trend could increase security threats along India’s eastern border if left unchecked.

Joy argued that during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, Bangladesh maintained a firm stance against militancy and anti-India groups, helping preserve regional stability. He claimed that the country’s current political climate has weakened those safeguards, creating uncertainty over future security and governance.

His remarks came as Sheikh Hasina made her first major public appearance since leaving Bangladesh in 2024. During the same event, she reiterated her intention to return to Bangladesh later this year despite the legal challenges she faces.

Joy also thanked India for providing shelter and security to his mother following her departure from Bangladesh, describing New Delhi’s support as significant during a difficult period.

The comments have added to the growing diplomatic and political tensions between Bangladesh and India following Sheikh Hasina’s public appearance in New Delhi. Bangladeshi authorities have strongly criticized the event, while India has stated that it neither organized nor endorsed the programme or the views expressed there.
