India’s private space industry has reached a major milestone with Bengaluru-based startup Astrobase Space Technologies unveiling its new Everest rocket engine, an 800 kN-class Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) engine designed to support the next generation of reusable launch vehicles.
The engine uses liquid oxygen (LOX) and methane as propellants and belongs to the 80-tonne thrust class. Astrobase says Everest is the country’s first privately developed, fully integrated FFSC rocket engine, marking an important step in the development of advanced indigenous propulsion technology.
Why Everest matters
FFSC propulsion is considered one of the more advanced approaches to liquid rocket-engine design. The technology is aimed at achieving high efficiency while supporting demanding requirements associated with reusable launch systems.
Astrobase is developing the engine with an eye on reusability and scalable launch capabilities. The company’s broader objective is to contribute to India’s domestic launch infrastructure and strengthen the country’s growing private space ecosystem.
The unveiling comes at a time when India’s commercial space sector is rapidly expanding, with private companies increasingly moving beyond satellite development and into launch vehicles, propulsion and other complex space technologies.
A boost for India’s private space ambitions
The development of an indigenous high-thrust FFSC engine could help Indian startups build more capable launch systems while reducing dependence on foreign propulsion technologies.
Astrobase has described Everest as a foundation for a stronger and more scalable launch ecosystem. The company has also indicated that this is an early milestone in a longer development programme rather than the final stage of the engine’s journey.
