Dhaka: Bangladesh police have arrested two men in Demra after two unusually shaped, bomb-like objects were recovered during a raid in the capital. The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) are now investigating the incident.
The objects were recovered around 5:30pm on Sunday, August 16, near the Garib Newaz Mosque Road intersection in the Nijhumbagh area of West Boxnagar under Demra Police Station.
Police initially detained 26-year-old Md Jewel Bhuiyan, a resident of Narsingdi. Investigators later arrested another suspected associate, 24-year-old Arif Chowdhury, who lives in the Nijhumbagh area.
According to police, the two suspicious objects were approximately six inches long and wrapped in black duct tape. They were seized after being recovered from Jewel during the operation.
Investigation underway
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the objects are actual explosives. Police said the materials will undergo examination and testing to determine their exact nature.
Investigators are also trying to establish where the objects came from, why they were being carried and whether anyone else was involved. The arrested individuals are being questioned as part of the investigation.
The incident has attracted the attention of both the ATU and CTTC because of the nature of the recovered objects and concerns over possible links to extremist or criminal activities.
Police said there were no casualties in the incident and that the law-and-order situation in Demra and surrounding areas remained normal following the arrests.
