Bangladesh has strongly criticized India for allowing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to address the media from New Delhi, saying the move has undermined efforts to improve bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. The remarks came after Hasina made her first public media appearance since leaving office in 2024.

In an official statement, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was deeply disappointed that Hasina, who is facing legal proceedings in Bangladesh, was given a platform to speak publicly from India. According to the ministry, the event included statements that it described as hostile toward the Bangladeshi state and its people, raising concerns over its potential impact on diplomatic ties.

The media interaction took place at an event hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi. During the session, Hasina discussed Bangladesh’s current political situation and reiterated her intention to return to the country despite the legal challenges awaiting her.

Dhaka argued that permitting the event was inconsistent with the spirit of constructive engagement between the two nations. The foreign ministry said such actions could create unnecessary obstacles to rebuilding trust and strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and India.

India, however, distanced itself from the event, clarifying that it neither organized nor endorsed the press conference. Indian officials stated that the programme was arranged by an independent organization and that the views expressed during the event were those of the participants alone.

The controversy has added fresh strain to already sensitive relations between Dhaka and New Delhi. Bangladesh has repeatedly sought Hasina’s extradition, while India has maintained that any request would be handled in accordance with its legal procedures and bilateral obligations.

Diplomatic observers say the incident could complicate ongoing efforts by both governments to stabilize relations. Despite recent attempts to maintain dialogue, the latest dispute highlights the continuing political sensitivities surrounding Hasina’s stay in India and her role in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape.
