India’s electric vehicle market reached a new monthly high in July 2026, with retail registrations climbing to 3,27,901 units, marking an increase of more than 66% year-on-year, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The latest figures highlight the accelerating shift towards electric mobility in India. EVs accounted for nearly one in every eight vehicles retailed across the country during July, signalling that electric vehicles are moving steadily from a niche segment into the mainstream automobile market.

Electric two-wheelers cross a major milestone

The two-wheeler segment emerged as one of the strongest drivers of the July surge. Electric two-wheeler registrations crossed the 2 lakh-unit mark for the first time, giving EVs an 11.2% share of total two-wheeler retail sales.

That compares with a 10.6% share in June and 7.7% during July 2025, demonstrating the rapid expansion of electric scooters and motorcycles in the Indian market.

Three-wheelers increasingly going electric

Electric three-wheelers continued to dominate their segment. Their market share increased to 65.1% in July, compared with 62.7% in June and 60.3% in July last year.

The trend suggests that electric mobility is becoming particularly attractive for commercial and passenger three-wheelers, where operating costs and fuel savings can play a significant role in purchase decisions.

Commercial and passenger EVs also gain ground

The shift is no longer limited to two- and three-wheelers. Electric commercial vehicles accounted for 3.57% of retail sales in July, up from 3.54% in June and 1.65% in July 2025.

Passenger EVs recorded an even sharper increase, with sales rising 83% from a year earlier. Their market share reached 7.9%, compared with 5.1% in July 2025.

Fuel prices and wider model choices support demand

Industry observers point to several factors behind the surge, including elevated oil prices, a broader selection of EV models and the expansion of dealership networks. Concerns over possible disruptions linked to the West Asia crisis and the resulting pressure on global oil prices could further encourage consumers to consider electric alternatives.

FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said the July numbers demonstrate that India’s EV transition is becoming visible in everyday vehicle purchases rather than remaining merely a future expectation.

With demand rising across almost every major vehicle category, India’s electric mobility sector appears to be entering a new phase of rapid adoption, although the availability of high-demand models and charging infrastructure will remain important factors for sustaining this momentum.
