Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s ancestral home in Magura was attacked by unidentified individuals on Wednesday night, just hours after he appeared virtually at a public media event featuring former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to local police, a group of attackers vandalized the property by pelting it with stones, smashing windows, and reportedly throwing petrol bombs, triggering a fire in part of the residence. The house was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters later brought the blaze under control.
The attack occurred shortly after Shakib participated virtually in Sheikh Hasina’s first public media interaction since leaving Bangladesh in 2024. During the event, Hasina discussed her political future and reiterated her intention to return to Bangladesh despite ongoing legal and political challenges.
While investigators have not officially confirmed a motive, several media reports suggested the timing of the attack may be linked to Shakib’s participation in the politically sensitive event. Police said they are reviewing evidence and working to identify those responsible.
Shakib, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers, also served as a Member of Parliament before the political upheaval that led to Sheikh Hasina’s removal from office in 2024. Since then, he has largely remained outside Bangladesh while facing legal scrutiny in multiple cases.
The incident has drawn widespread attention as political tensions continue to influence public life in Bangladesh. Authorities have assured that the attack will be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
