US President Donald Trump has drawn fresh criticism after appearing to downplay Russia’s continued attacks on Ukrainian civilians, saying the United States is geographically removed from the conflict because it is “separated by an ocean.” His remarks came as Russia intensified missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, causing more civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.
Speaking to reporters, Trump suggested that while the war remains a serious issue, Europe faces a more immediate security challenge due to its proximity to the conflict. He argued that the United States should remain focused on protecting its own national interests, emphasizing the geographical distance between America and the battlefield.
Trump’s comments came as Ukraine reported another wave of Russian attacks on residential areas and critical infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said recent strikes killed and injured civilians in several regions, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for additional Western air-defense systems, particularly Patriot missile interceptors, to protect cities from escalating aerial assaults.
The US president, however, reiterated his belief that a negotiated settlement remains the best path forward. Trump expressed hope that diplomatic efforts could eventually bring an end to the conflict, although he did not directly condemn the latest Russian strikes during his remarks.
Ukraine and several European leaders have repeatedly urged Washington to maintain strong military and political support, arguing that Russia’s attacks on civilian areas demonstrate the need for continued international backing. Recent UN assessments have also shown a sharp increase in civilian casualties during the first half of 2026 as missile and drone attacks intensified.
Analysts say Trump’s latest comments are likely to fuel debate over future US policy toward the Russia–Ukraine war. His administration has consistently stressed the importance of ending the conflict through negotiations, while critics argue that softer rhetoric toward Moscow could weaken Western unity and embolden Russia’s military campaign.
