Andy Burnham has officially become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after being invited by King Charles III to form a new government at Buckingham Palace, following the resignation of Keir Starmer. Burnham’s appointment marks another leadership transition in British politics, making him the country’s seventh prime minister in a decade.
The transfer of power followed the United Kingdom’s established constitutional process. Earlier in the day, outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer formally tendered his resignation to the King. Burnham then met the monarch and accepted the invitation to lead the government before returning to 10 Downing Street to deliver his first address as prime minister.
Burnham promises a fresh direction
In his first public remarks as prime minister, Burnham acknowledged the political instability Britain has experienced in recent years and pledged to restore confidence in government.
He outlined priorities including raising living standards, supporting British industry, reducing regional inequality and tackling homelessness. Leadership change without a general election
Burnham assumed office after winning the Labour Party leadership following Starmer’s resignation. Because Labour continues to command a majority in the House of Commons, British constitutional rules do not require a new general election for a change of prime minister. The next scheduled UK general election is due by 2029 unless one is called earlier.

Attention is now turning to Burnham’s cabinet formation, particularly key economic and foreign policy positions. Political analysts expect several changes to senior government roles as the new administration begins setting its legislative and economic agenda.
